Let’s not sugarcoat it. A lot of business owners say they’re running a business but what they’ve really done is buying themselves a job… with longer hours, more stress, and no time off.
I’ve been there. Early days at iQuest, I was the business. I still remember walking around Disneyland with my laptop open, placing orders, invoicing, replying to emails and answering phone calls.
Here’s how to tell if you’ve built a business or just a job in disguise 👇
1. What happens if you don’t show up for 3 week?
If everything slows down or stops… you’ve built a job, NOT a business.
2. Are you working in the business or ON it?
If you’re stuck working 50+ hours a week, chasing clients, invoicing and putting out fires, you’re not a business owner. You are an employee carrying all the risks.
3. Can your team make decisions without you?
If every decision flows through you, you're the bottleneck. It's a JOB.
4. Do you have systems and a playbook your team actually uses?
If you’re still getting 5+ work emails A DAY asking how to do stuff, work schedule, or check project status etc, you’re the system. And that’s a job.
5. Is your business funding your personal vision?
If you’re not getting time and money to spend on yourself and family, it's a JOB.
